Confessions of a type nut: Quick tricks to get gorgeous type on your site, and why you want to
I’ve been a type nut for 45 years.
Seriously.
I have OPINIONS on the shapes of PARTS of LETTERS.
In the scheme of things, you probably don’t want to get as picky as I am.
Still:
You want to make sure your type is easy to read.
You want to make sure it speaks in the same voice as your site — it looks like it belongs.
Those things matter—a lot.
(Would you choose a swirly script for Jiffy Lube? Didn’t think so.)
But you don’t have to spend decades to learn the basics. Just come spend a few minutes learning a few basics that won’t change with the tech — at least as long as people still have eyes!

Data Driven Content Strategy That’s Guaranteed To Increase Your Traffic.
We have all heard that content is King when it comes to SEO, but few can define how to make content that search engines love. I’ll break down the different components that Google is looking for and how to use Google’s own data as a recipe for quality content.
Data-Driven Marketing with WordPress
Does this quote resonate with you…
“Half the money I spend on advertising is wasted; the trouble is I don’t know which half.”
Given the amount of data available today, you need to know what marketing endeavors are working for your business. With this information, you will be able to focus the marketing budget toward what is working and identify where things need to be changed.
In this talk, you will learn:
How to measure your success with online marketing
Common goals for internet marketing campaigns
Ways to connect goals to KPI and ROI
How to avoid common technical challenges
Places to go for more information, guidance, and support
If you are confused by online marketing, you need to start with a foundation based on making decisions using data.
You know that other businesses are using online marketing to generate sales, find leads, and increase revenue. However, it’s difficult to figure out what works with content marketing, SEO, PPC, social media, and everything else. Some people suggest they know the “secret” to online marketing, and it turns out they only know how to help you get more followers and likes. Unfortunately, you can’t pay the bills with likes on Facebook.
This talk will show you how to move beyond likes, shares, and clicks to improve the bottom line for your business.

Handling Clients with Compassion, Providing White Glove Service without Selling Your Soul
Any designer that has had more than a handful of clients knows that they are not all the same. Just like in any business there are those that are well let’s just say a bit more difficult or hands on than others. So how do you handle these clients without losing yourself in the process? Compassion… that is right compassion is key in every relationship, even in business.
Say you have a client that quits responding to your emails, or perhaps they are late on their payments. Our knee jerk reaction is to cut them off and move on to the next more cooperative client. Did you take a moment and put yourself in their shoes and perhaps ask them what might be preventing them from meeting your expectations? Life happens and trust me you will hear every excuse in the book as a business owner. I cannot tell you how many “checks in the mail”, “my air conditioner went on the frits again”, “my car broke down”, “I got a divorce” and much more. I now know what teachers go through when the proverbial dog ate my homework is laid on them.
Through all these excuses and some legitimate reasons, as business owners we must continue to provide the impeccable white glove service our clients have come to expect from us. In this talk, Charles will go over ways of handling different clients with and scenarios with the same level of compassion and service his and hopefully your company has become known for. Key areas such as listening, responding with empathy, learning how to avoid the drama queens and what to do when you find yourself in business with them.

How An Attacker Sees Your Website – A View Through The Eyes of the Hacker
Why would a hacker hack YOUR website? For fun, for glory? Not anymore! Hacking websites is now a monetized criminal enterprise. They don’t care about your website, they care about your website computing resources.
Come see what the hacker actually sees. Witness real accounts of your website password being guessed 1000’s of times per minute. See how that guy across from you at Starbucks is watching your web traffic as it floats through the Wi-Fi. See what happens when one of your employees gets tricked into opening that phishing email.
An understanding of what the bad guys know (and how easy it is for them to operate) will motivate you to take a proactive approach to security prior to a hack – instead of spending tens of thousands to get your data back after the fact. In other words, come get scared straight, you’ll appreciate it later!

How to Conduct an Online Market Research Survey for Your Business Idea
You have a product or service idea, but will it sell? Is it something people want? How much would they pay?
Rather than trust your gut, get hard answers to these questions (and others) from real people in your target market. This course will teach you exactly how to run an online market research survey for any product or service idea—a survey that empowers you with data-driven insights about how to turn your idea into a real business concept that consumers (and investors) will love.
Online surveys can be used to gather real consumer feedback that answers a diverse set of business questions. Examples include:
1. Which UI do my customers like best?
2. How big is the market for my product?
3. Which logo resonates better with my target market?
4. Which website design prompts more leads?
5. Would my customers use a mobile app, if I developed one for my service?
6. How much does my target market typically spend on __?
(This talk will be based on a 10-lesson course I wrote earlier this year for Highbrow. Link below. 52 students so far, 100% recommend rate.)

Is it Moral to Click Like? Ethics on the Web
Most professions have defined codes of ethics, and their educational programs have requirements of ethical coursework to get degrees. For some reason it’s not accepted that all computer science programs and developer bootcamps should have ethics courses. With the sheer amount of harm done by tech, this is mind boggling.
This topic has picked up a lot of traction thanks to tireless work by a few individuals in our community, but ethical thinking should be in all of our minds while working. We’ll look at a few ethical frameworks and standards, as well as some examples for how they can be applied. It’s time for a discussion on ethics in the web, how we can individually apply ethical thinking in our work, and how to share this with others.

What does your brand look like in a voice first world?
With the explosive adoption of Smart Speakers, the primary interaction with your content will become auditory instead of visual. On the world wide web, our brand revolves around a URL, logo, tagline, color palette, font, images, etc., but when your audience is no longer engaging with your content through a screen, traditional brand elements become invisible. In a voice first environment, when your audience just asks for what they want, they expect the answer to be returned verbally. In a voice first world, what does your brand look like, (I mean, sound like)? In this talk, I explore the components of a verbal brand, how to prepare for the shift from written content to verbal content, as well as the future of voice technology and how to prepare for it.

⚡ Network like you mean it, even if you don’t ⚡
Let’s face it, Wordcamps are REALLY big networking opportunities. Sadly, most of us see them as ONLY an educational seminar where we might see a few current friends and make 1-2 new ones. Whether you are an introvert and love your anonymity, or if you are just too overcome with knowledge with every new session, I will show you some simple tactics you can use to make sure you don’t miss the opportunities to network at Wordcamp.
